Neiafu Tonga
Schweren Herzens nehmen wir Abschied vom Königreich Tonga. Wir hatten viel zu wenig Zeit. Die Custom-Mitarbeiterin besteht darauf, dass wir erneut mit MariaNoa am baufälligen Pier anlegen. Dann, am frühen Morgen, hat sie aber doch kein Interesse an Bord zu kommen. Zum dritten Mal füllen wir das nahezu identische Clear out Formular aus. Dann können wir endlich aufbrechen.
It is hard to say goodbye to the Kingdom of Tonga. We had not enough time. The day before customs insisted to dock with MariaNoa at the dilapidated pier today. But, early in the morning, customs has no interest in coming on board. Instead we fill out the almost identical clear out form for the 3rd time. Then we can finally set off.
Levuka
Die 410 nM vom Königreich Tonga nach Fiji vergehen wie im Fluge. Wir haben beste Segelbedingungen. 2 Tage und Nächte lang zieht uns der Parasailor dem Ziel entgegen. Der Wind kommt konstant von achtern und das Meer ist nach einigen Flautentagen wellenlos. Der Gennacker in Kombination mit dem Squareheadmain macht richtig Dampf, während die weiße Garderobe aus Selbstwendefock und Gross zwischen den kleinen Inseln und Riffen Fiji`s die höchste Wendigkeit bereitet. Wir haben Levuka als port of entry gewählt und unsere Unterlagen vorab losgeschickt. In Levuka sind wir das 5. Boot, das dieses Jahr hier einklariert. Wir sind also eher Exoten und damit besonders willkommen.
The 410 nM from the Kingdom of Tonga to Fiji fly by. We have the best sailing conditions. For 2 days and nights the parasailor pulls us to our destination. The wind is constantly coming from stern and after a few days of calm the sea is waveless. Our new gennacker in combination with the square head main speeds up MariaNoa, while the white wardrobe of self-tacking jib and main provides maximum flexibility between the small islands and reefs of Fiji. We chose Levuka as the port of entry and sent our documents in advance. In Levuka we are the 5th boat to clear in this year. So we are sort of exotic and particularly welcome.
Health
Den Harbourmaster, Biosecurity, Custom, Immigration und das Cruising Permit sind kostenfrei bzw. können gleich am Hafen bezahlt werden. Nur Health erwartet unseren Besuch im örtlichen Krankenhaus. Mich trifft ein Schock. Solch ein heruntergekommenes Hospital mit antiquierter Ausstattung und riesigen Mehrbettzimmern habe ich nicht erwartet. Unter Fiji habe ich mir ein Land mit einem Standard wie Neuseeland und Australien vorgestellt – kein 3. Welt Standard.
The Harbormaster, Biosecurity, Custom, Immigration and the Cruising Permit are free of charge or can be paid directly at the port. Only Health awaits our visit to the local hospital. I’m shocked. I didn’t expect such a run-down hospital with antiquated equipment and huge shared rooms. When I thought of Fiji, I imagined a country with a standard like New Zealand and Australia – not a 3rd world standard.
UNESCO
Levuka, die ehemalige Hauptstadt von Fidschi, ist seit 2013 UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Die Stadt ist bekannt für ihre gut erhaltene koloniale Architektur und ihre historische Bedeutung. Levuka war im 19. Since 2013 Levuka, the former capital of Fiji, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and historical significance. Levuka was an important trading and administrative center in the 19th century and played a central role in Fiji’s history.
The city offers a unique mix of different cultural influences, including European, Polynesian and Asian elements. Notable buildings include old churches, schools and administrative buildings that reflect the history and development of the region.
Viele der Gebäude sind aus Holz gebaut und verfügen über große Veranden, die den tropischen Wetterbedingungen Rechnung tragen. Zu den bemerkenswertesten Bauwerken gehören das Old Capital Building, das eine wichtige Rolle in der Geschichte Fidschis spielt, sowie die zahlreichen Kirchen und Wohnhäuser, die den Charme der Stadt ausmachen. Many of the buildings are constructed of wood and have large verandas to accommodate the tropical weather conditions. The most notable buildings include the Old Capital Building, which plays an important role in Fiji’s history, as well as the numerous churches and residential buildings that make up the city’s charm. UNESCO recognized Levuka not only for its architecture, but also for its role in the history of the Pacific and the development of trade in the region.
The Lodge
Das Loge Haus (oder „The Lodge“) spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der Geschichte des Landes. Es wurde im 19. Jahrhundert erbaut und diente als Unterkunft für wichtige Persönlichkeiten und Besucher. Das Gebäude ist ein Beispiel für die koloniale Bauweise und spiegelt die Geschichte und Kultur der Region wider.
The Lodge House (or „The Lodge“) plays an important role in the country’s history. It was built in the 19th century and served as accommodation for important people and visitors. The building is an example of colonial architecture and reflects the history and culture of the region.
Levuka – Vuda
Der Weg von Levuka auf Ovalau im Osten von Viti Levu der Hauptinsel Fidschi`s bis zur Vuda Marina im NordWesten dauert geschlagene 3 Tage. Wir schlängeln uns durch diverse kleine Inseln und unendlich vielen Untiefen. An Segeln ist nicht zu denken.
The route from Levuka on Ovalau in the east of Viti Levu – the main island of Fiji – to Vuda Marina in the north-west takes 3 days. We motor through various small islands and endless shallow areas. Sailing is out of the question.
Ocean Film Festival
Durch Zufall ankern wir vor der Vuda Marina am Tag des Ocean Film Festivals. Im Boatshed Restaurant jagt eine Performance die nächste. Zur Begrüßung spielt eine Band bekannte songs.

Darauf halten in traditionellen Baströcken gekleidete Männer eine Zeremonie ab, die das Übersetzen eines Schiffes beinhaltet. Later men dressed in traditional raffia skirts hold a ceremony that includes crossing a ship. In Fijian mythology, crossing a ship has a deeper symbolic meaning. It is often seen as a metaphor for the transition between different stages of life. The ship can be seen as a symbol of life itself, while translating represents the process of traveling through challenges and changes. In many stories and legends, this act is associated with the search for knowledge, spiritual enlightenment, or the achievement of a new goal. It is an important part of Fijians‘ cultural identity and heritage, emphasizing the connection to the sea and nature.

Nadi
Vor der Vuda Marina ist viel Schwell. Wir verholen direkt vor den Internationalen Flughafen Nadi um unseren Besuch abzuholen. Auf einem Markt in Nadi können wir endlich einmal wieder in frischem Obst und Gemüse schwelgen. Außerdem besorgen wir Kava als Geschenk für den geplanten Besuch in den Dörfern der Yasawa Inseln.
There is a lot of swell in front of the Vuda Marina. We pull over directly in front of Nadi International Airport to pick up our visitor. At a market in Nadi we can finally indulge in fresh fruit and vegetables again. We also get kava as a gift for the planned visit to the villages of the Yasawa Islands.
Zu festlichen Anlässen trägt man auf Fiji den Sulu, einen Wickelrock, den wir gleich in einem Geschäft nebenan finden.
On festive occasions in Fiji men wear the “Sulu”, a wrapped skirt we find in a shop next door.
Semi`s Kava Night
Nanuya Lailai ist eine Insel der Yasawa-Gruppe. Sie liegt nördlich von Nanuya Levu, das als Drehort für den Film „Die Blaue Lagune“ diente. „The Blue Lagoon“ ist ein US-amerikanisches Filmdrama aus dem Jahr 1980 anhand des gleichnamigen Romans von Henry Stacpoole aus dem Jahr 1908. Die Hauptrollen spielten Brooke Shields und Christopher Atkins
Nanuya Lailai is an island in the Yasawa group. It is located north of Nanuya Levu, which was used as a filming location for the film “The Blue Lagoon”. “The Blue Lagoon” is an American drama from 1980 based on the 1908 novel of the same name by Henry Stacpoole. The main roles were played by Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins.
An diesem Ort nehmen wir bei Semi`s Kava Night an unserer ersten Kava-Zeremonie teil. Schon Stunden zuvor, waren die Speisen in einem Erdofen vergraben worden, die nun bei Scheinwerferlicht vorsichtig wieder ausgegraben werden. Das Essen ist sehr lecker und die Atmosphäre mysthisch.
This is where we take part in our first Kava ceremony at Semi`s Kava Night. Hours earlier, the food had been buried in an earthen oven and was now being carefully dug up again under the spotlight. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is mystical.
Lailai Islands
Über Lailai Island führt ein Betonweg. Auf ihm überqueren wir die Insel. Hier leben die Einheimischen, die wahrscheinlich mehrheitlich im Resort Nanuya arbeiten. Hier werden Schweine gezüchtet – Resortgäste haben einen großen Fleischbedarf. Kinder begrüßen uns jubelnd am Strand.
A concrete path leads across Lailai Island. The locals live here, most of whom probably work at the Nanuya resort. Pigs are bred here. Resort guests have a great need for meat. Children cheerfully greet us on the beach.
Nemo
Vor dem Blue Lagoon Resort auf Malakati gehen wir auf der Suche nach Nemo schnorcheln. Immer wieder streicht ein Weissspitzen-Riffhai um uns herum. Und tatsächlich treffen wir auf eine Unterart der Film berühmten Clownsfische. Die blaue Unterart wird auch falscher Anemonenfisch genannt.
We go snorkeling in search of Nemo in front of the Blue Lagoon Resort on Malakati. A white tip reef shark keeps roaming around us. And we actually meet a subspecies of the movie-famous clownfish. The blue subspecies is also called false anemonefish.
Octopus Resort
Das Octopus Resort auf Waya ist unser erster Stop. Mit einem erlesenen 9-Gänge-Menue und viel Folklore zelebrieren wir meinen Geburtstag.
The Octopus Resort on Waya Iland is our first stop. We celebrate my birthday with an exquisite 9-course menu and lots of folklore.
Somosomo Village
Im Somosomo Village gehen wir an Land. Eine Bewohnerin nimmt sich sofort unser an und führt uns quer durchs Dorf zum Chief. Nach kurzer Verzögerung werden wir in einer s.g. SevuSevu empfangen. Wir überreichen einen Bund Kava-Wurzeln und leisten eine Spende. Der Chief heißt uns herzlich willkommen. Wir dürfen so oft wir wollen durchs Dorf laufen und in der Bucht ankern. Für die Kinder haben wir u.a. Malhefte, Buntstifte, Luftballons und Zahnbürsten mitgebracht.
We disembark in Somosomo Village. A resident immediately takes care of us and leads us across the village to the “Chief”. After a short delay we will be received in a so-called SevuSevu. We hand over a bunch of kava roots to the “Chief” and make a donation. The “Chief” welcomes us warmly. We can walk through the village and anchor in the bay as often and as long as we want. For the children we brought, among other things, coloring books, colored pencils, balloons and toothbrushes.
Manta Ray Alley
Viele Segelfreunde haben in der Vergangenheit von ihren Begegnungen mit Mantarochen geschwärmt. Außer einem Manta, der auf Bora Bora unter MariaNoa durchgeschwommen ist, war uns bisher die Begegnung mit diesen majestätischen Tieren verwehrt geblieben. In der Manta Ray Alley begegnen wir den Manta Ray nun gleich mehrfach. Die Tiere wissen genau, wie tief so ein schnorchelnder Mensch kommen kann und bleiben knapp auf Abstand. Sie sind riesig – mindestens so groß wie unser Dingy und das ist knapp 3 m lang. Der Pass zwischen Dr. Awaoa und Yasawa Insel entwickelt durch die Gezeiten eine starke Strömung und ist reich an Plankton. Ein Paradies für diverse Fischschwärme und eben die Manta Ray.
Many sailing enthusiasts have raved about their encounters with manta rays in the past. Apart from a manta that swam under MariaNoa on Bora Bora, we had so far been denied an encounter with these majestic animals. In the Manta Ray Alley we encounter the Manta Ray several times. The animals know exactly how deep a snorkeling person can get and keep a close distance. They are huge – at least as big as our dingy and that is almost 3 m long. The pass between Awaoa and Yasawa Island develops a strong tidal current and is rich in plankton. A paradise for various schools of fish and the Manta Ray.
Paradise Cove
Im Paradise Cove Dive Shop haben wir einen 2 tank dive gebucht. Mit Aku unserem Dive Instruktor fahren wir zunächst zur Wall. Nach nur wenigen Minuten sind wir am geplanten Einstieg angekommen. Die Dive sites rund um Naukacevu Island sind mit den schnellen Tauchbooten nicht weit. Nach einer Einweisung lassen wir uns rücklings ins Meer fallen und beginnen mit dem Abstieg. Wir tauchen durch mehrere Höhlen.
We booked a 2 tank dive at Paradise Cove Dive Shop. With Aku, our dive instructor, we first drive to a dive site called the “Wall”. After just a few minutes we arrived at the planned entrance. The dive sites around the Island are not far and reached in a few minuters with the fast diving boats. After an introduction, we fall backwards into the sea and begin the descent. We dive through several caves.
Aku zeigt uns mit seiner Taschenlampe viele Details, wie z.B. eine Koralle, die bei Berührung ihre Farbe ändert. Verschiedene Haie sind neugierig geworden und kreisen um uns, verlieren aber schon bald das Interesse und verschwinden im vom Plankton trüben Wasser.
Der zweite Tauchgang erfolgt nahezu direkt vor dem Paradise Cove. Ein großer Korallenturm wird mehrfach umkreist.
Aku shows us many details with his flashlight, such as a coral that changes color when touched. Various sharks have become curious and circle around us, but soon lose interest and disappear into the water, which is cloudy with plankton.
The second dive takes place almost directly in front of Paradise Cove. A large coral tower is circled several times.
Nanuya Island
Segler haben zu wenig Bewegung. Daher nutzen wir jede Gelegenheit, durch Spaziergänge oder kleine Wanderungen unseren Kreislauf auf Schwung zu bringen. Auf Naviti Island gleich hinter Semi und seinem Erdofen führt ein Weg quer über die Insel auf die andere Seite. Der Weg ist gut befestigt und wir erklimmen schnell die kleine Anhöhe mit einer Gedenktafel von Ivan Albert Parker der 2023 verstarb.
Sailors have too little exercise. That’s why we take every opportunity to get our circulation going by taking walks or short hikes. On Naviti Island, just behind Semi and his earth oven, a path leads across the island to the other side. The path is well paved and we quickly climb the small hill with a memorial plaque for Ivan Albert Parker, who died in 2023.
Val und Ivan Parker aus der Familie Parker hatten eine tiefe Liebe zu Fidschi, seinen Menschen und seinem kulturellen Erbe.
Seit 2002 engagierten sie sich leidenschaftlich dafür, das Leben der Menschen vor Ort zu „verbessern“ und gleichzeitig die Wunder Fidschis und insbesondere der Yasawa-Inseln in der Welt bekannt zu machen. Über den Variety Club of Queensland war das erste Engagement von The Parker für die Gemeinde der Yasawa-Insel die Hilfe beim Wiederaufbau der Kirche im Dorf Kese, die einige Jahre zuvor von einem Zyklon zerstört worden war. Anschließend kauften sie ein „Langboot“, das als Wassertaxi genutzt werden sollte, um Kinder aus umliegenden Dörfern zur Nacula-Grundschule zu bringen. Die Familie Parker übernahm das Nanuya Island Resort Ende 2014 und begann sofort mit der Reparatur der Zyklonschäden. Die Arbeit ging bis 2018 weiter und stellte sicher, dass sowohl den Gästen als auch den Menschen, die in der Nähe des Nanuya Island Resorts leben, das Beste von allem geboten wurde.
Val and Ivan Parker of the Parker family had a deep love for Fiji, its people and its cultural heritage.
Since 2002, they have been passionate about “improving” the lives of local people while promoting the wonders of Fiji, and particularly the Yasawa Islands, to the world. Through the Variety Club of Queensland, The Parker’s first involvement with the Yasawa Island community was helping to rebuild the church in Kese Village, which had been destroyed by a cyclone several years earlier. They then purchased a “long boat” to be used as a water taxi to take children from surrounding villages to Nacula Elementary School. The Parker family took over the Nanuya Island Resort in late 2014 and immediately began repairing the cyclone damage. The work continued into 2018, ensuring that the best of everything was offered to both guests and people living near Nanuya Island Resort.
Auf dem Kamm der kleinen Anhöhe gibt es viele Insekten. Große gelbe Spinnen haben quer zum Wind ihre Spinnweben gesponnen, um die Insekten zu fangen. Der Blick in beide Richtungen übers Meer ist fantastisch.
Am Strand stoßen wir auf ein Schild auf dem selbst gemachte organische Eiscreme angeboten wird. Das lassen wir uns nicht zweimal sagen und genießen das Eis am Stiel in verschiedenen Geschmacksrichtungen auf der Basis lokaler Früchte.
There are many insects on the crest of the small hill. Large yellow spiders have spun their webs across the wind to catch the insects. The view over the sea in both directions is fantastic.
On the beach we come across a sign offering homemade organic ice cream. We don’t need to be told twice and enjoy the popsicles in different flavors based on local fruits.
Vanua Levu
Vanua Levu ist ein kleines Archipel auf dem Weg zurück zur Vuda Marina. Wir wollen tauchen gehen, müssen aber beide Tauchflaschen mit dem Kompressor nachladen. Der infernalische Krach lockt gleich einen ganzen Schwarm von Schwarzspitzen-Riffhaien an, die schon bald um MariaNoa kreisen.
Vanua Levu is a small archipelago on the way back to Vuda Marina. We want to go diving, but we have to reload both diving tanks with the compressor. The infernal noise immediately attracts a whole swarm of blacktip reef sharks, which soon circle MariaNoa.
Bei Ebbe ist der Strand wegen des davor liegenden Riffs nicht zu erreichen. Bei Flut erreichen wir mit Schwung den steilen Strand, lassen dann aber doch das Dingy am Anker frei schwoien. Ganz frei von Schwell ist die anchorage nicht. Dafür haben wir nahezu Flaute.
At low tide the beach cannot be reached because of the reef in front of it. At high tide we reach the steep beach and let the dingy float freely on the anchor. The anchorage is not completely free of swell. But we are almost in a lull.
Vuda Marina
Wir kehren zurück in die Vuda Marina. Hier haben wir einen Liegeplatz reserviert, um über Hongkong für einen Monat nach Deutschland zu fliegen. Boote, die hier die Zyklonen Saison über lagern, werden mit dem Kiel ins Erdreich eingegraben, um die Windangriffsfläche zu reduzieren.
We return to the Vuda Marina. We have reserved a berth here to fly via Hong Kong to Germany for a month. Boats that camp here during the cyclone season have their keels buried in the ground to reduce the area exposed to the wind.
Mini Globe Race 5.80
Das Mini Globe Race 5.80 führt die 15 Teilnehmer von und nach Antigua mit Stopps in Panama, Kapstadt und Recife. Während noch die Teilnehmer der ARC World auf Fidschi sind, treffen wir durch Zufall auf die Flotte des Mini Globe Race 5.80 während ihres Aufenthaltes in Fidschi Vuda Marina.
Die Class Globe 5.80 ist eine Bootsklasse, die für den Bau einer kleinen, erschwinglichen Sperrholz-Epoxid-Yacht konzipiert wurde, die überall auf der Welt gebaut werden kann. The Mini Globe Race 5.80 takes the 15 participants to and from Antigua in the Carribean with stops in Panama, Cape Town and Recife. While the participants of the ARC World are still in Fiji, we accidentally meet the fleet of the Mini Globe Race 5.80 during their stay in Fiji Vuda Marina.
The Class Globe 5.80 is a class of boats designed to build a small affordable yacht, that can be built out of plywood and epoxy anywhere in the world. The aim is to make affordable offshore sailing possible, even for solo sailors. The Class Globe 5.80 is a one-size-fits-all class, meaning that all boats are built to a uniform design and sailed according to uniform rules.
