New Caledonia
Vanuatu war ein Abenteuer. Die eklatante Rückständigkeit strahlte eine überraschende Faszination aus. Und wir wären gerne noch geblieben. Aber wieder einmal stehen wir unter Zeitdruck. Der Beginn der Zyklonen-Saison rückt näher. So brechen wir auf nach Neukaledonien, welches zu Frankreich gehört und aus Dutzenden Inseln besteht. Die Hauptinsel Grand Terre ist bekannt für die artenreiche Lagune, die mit 24.000 km² zu den größten weltweit gehört.
Vanuatu was an adventure. The striking backwardness exuded a surprising fascination. And we would have liked to stay longer. But once again, we are under time pressure. The start of the cyclone season is approaching. So we set off for New Caledonia, which belongs to France and consists of dozens of islands. The main island, Grand Terre, is known for its species-rich lagoon, which, at 24,000 km², is one of the largest in the world.
In finsterer Nacht begegnen wir im Canal de La Havannah dem Kreuzfahrtschiff Carnival Splendor. Die Carnival Splendor ist ein großes Kreuzfahrtschiff der Carnival Cruise Line, das seit 2008 in Betrieb ist und sich durch ein breites Unterhaltungsangebot, Sportanlagen, mehrere Restaurants und Spa-Bereiche auszeichnet, wobei es besonders Familien anspricht und auf 13 Decks Platz für über 3.000 Passagiere bietet. Nach einigen Renovierungen, zuletzt um 2019, wurde es für den australischen Markt umgestaltet und ist für seine bunte, Las Vegas-ähnliche Innenausstattung bekannt, inklusive überdachtem Poolbereich, Wasserrutsche und zahlreichen Unterhaltungsmöglichkeiten.
In the dark of night, we encounter the cruise ship Carnival Splendor in the Canal de La Havannah. The Carnival Splendor is a large cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line since 2008. It offers a wide range of entertainment, sports facilities, several restaurants, and spa areas, making it particularly appealing to families. It has 13 decks and can accommodate over 3,000 passengers. After several renovations, most recently in 2019, it was redesigned for the Australian market and is known for its colorful, Las Vegas-style interior, including a covered pool area, water slide, and numerous entertainment options.
Wir gehen in einer abgelegenen Bucht vor Anker bevor wir am darauffolgenden Morgen zur Hauptstadt Nouméa verholen, um einzuklarieren. Neukaledonien hat einen vergleichbaren Lebensstandard wie Australien, Neuseeland oder Fidschi – Amtssprache ist Französisch.
We drop anchor in a secluded bay before moving on to the capital Nouméa the following morning to clear customs. New Caledonia has a standard of living comparable to Australia, New Zealand, or Fiji – the official language is French.
Baie de Gouero
In der Hauptstadt Nouméa mieten wir einen Leihwagen, um wenigstens den Süd-Westlichen Teil von Grand Terre kennen zu lernen. Wir besuchen die Baie de Gouero, eine landschaftlich besonders schöne Bucht, in der aus Sicherheitsgründen Schwimmen verboten ist. Dieses Verbot scheint aber für Wellenreiter nicht zu gelten. Durch einen natürlichen Tunnel kommen die jungen Einheimischen mit ihren Brettern, um zu den Wellen hinauszuschwimmen.
In the capital city of Nouméa, we rent a car to explore at least the southwestern part of Grand Terre. We visit Baie de Gouero, a particularly scenic bay where swimming is prohibited for safety reasons. However, this prohibition does not seem to apply to surfers. Young locals come through a natural tunnel with their boards to swim out to the waves.
Case du domaine de Deva
Während in Vanuatu die Dorfbewohner in ihren traditionellen Häusern wie vor tausend Jahren leben, gibt es diese Architektur in Neukaledonien nur noch in Ausstellungen und in Freilichtmuseen. Wir kommen an den Ruinen des niedergebrannten Case du domaine de Deva vorbei. Vor einigen Monaten gab es in Neukaledonien Ausschreitungen zwischen den Einheimischen und der französischstämmigen Bevölkerung. Ganze Gewerbegebiete gingen in Flammen auf, Kulturgüter wurden niedergebrannt.
While in Vanuatu the villagers live in their traditional houses as they did a thousand years ago, in New Caledonia this architecture can only be found in exhibitions and open-air museums. We pass the ruins of the burned-down Case du domaine de Deva. A few months ago, there were riots in New Caledonia between the locals and the French-descended population. Entire industrial parks went up in flames and cultural assets were burned down.
Îlot Amédée
24 Kilometer südlich von Noumea vor der kleinen mit einem Leuchtturm bebauten Insel Ilet Amedee finden wir einige Mooringbojen, an denen wir mit ein paar befreundeten Yachten festmachen. In dem glasklaren Wasser tummeln sich Seeschildkröten – ein Paradies für Schnorchel- und Tauchausflüge.
Twenty-four kilometers south of Noumea, off the small island of Ilet Amedee with its lighthouse, we find a few mooring buoys where we tie up with a couple of friendly yachts. Sea turtles frolic in the crystal-clear water—a paradise for snorkeling and diving excursions.
Die Metallteile des gleichnamigen Leuchtturms wurden 1862 von Rigolet im Nordosten von Paris hergestellt, und der Turm wurde in Paris als Demonstrationsmodell gebaut. The metal parts of the lighthouse of the same name were manufactured in 1862 by Rigolet in northeast Paris, and the tower was built in Paris as a demonstration model. It was then dismantled into parts weighing a total of 388 tons and transported on the Seine to the port of Le Havre, from where it was shipped to New Caledonia. At 56 meters high with 247 steps, it is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world and was the first metal lighthouse built in France.
Sein Licht signalisiert die Einfahrt in die Passage von Boulari, eine von nur drei natürlichen Passagen im Riff, das Neukaledonien umgibt. Auf der anderen Seite der Welt war der ursprüngliche Leuchtturm Roches-Douvres im Ärmelkanal der Zwilling des Leuchtturms Amédée. Heute ist er eine sehr beliebte Touristenattraktion.
Its light signals the entrance to the Boulari Passage, one of only three natural passages in the reef surrounding New Caledonia. On the other side of the world, the original Roches-Douvres lighthouse in the English Channel was the twin of the Amédée lighthouse. Today, it is a very popular tourist attraction.
Dugong
Der Dugong-Bestand in Neukaledonien ist stark gefährdet und genetisch isoliert. Die sehr kleine Population aus circa 900 Tieren mit geringer genetischer Vielfalt erfordert dringend Schutzmaßnahmen. Diese Seekühe ernähren sich von Seegras in den Lagunen und sind durch Wilderei, Bootskollisionen und Lebensraumverlust bedroht, wobei Studien auf eine kritische Populationsgröße hinweisen, die eine Hochstufung auf „vom Aussterben bedroht“ rechtfertigen könnte.
The dugong population in New Caledonia is critically endangered and genetically isolated. The very small population of approximately 900 animals with low genetic diversity urgently requires protective measures. These sea cows feed on seagrass in the lagoons and are threatened by poaching, boat collisions, and habitat loss, with studies indicating a critical population size that could justify an upgrade to “critically endangered.”
Wir treffen auf die Dugong während eines Tauchgangs, den wir unweit der Ilet Amedee unternehmen. Jenny und Lukas von der Lucky Jonny sind unsere Diveguides. Die Strömung der nahen Brandung am Außenriff ist zum Teil sehr stark und wirft uns hin und her.
We encounter the dugong during a dive we take not far from Ilet Amedee. Jenny and Lukas from the Lucky Jonny are our dive guides. The current of the nearby surf on the outer reef is very strong in places and tosses us back and forth.
Floating Dingy-Party
Am Abend treffen wir uns in einer Floating Dingy Party. Der erste Dingy wirft einen Anker und alle anderen machen sich am ersten Dingy fest. Während mitgebrachte Getränke und Knabbereien geteilt und konsumiert werden, versinkt die Sonne – wie so oft auf dieser Reise – spektakulär im Meer. Es ist unglaublich gesellig und das Dingygefüge entflechtet sich erst, als es pechschwarze Nacht ist. Jeder kehrt auf sein Schiff zurück – sie sind ja nicht weit.
In the evening, we meet up for a floating dinghy party. The first dinghy drops anchor and all the others tie themselves to it. As we share and consume the drinks and snacks we have brought with us, the sun sinks spectacularly into the sea – as it has done so often on this trip. It is incredibly convivial, and the dinghy formation only breaks up when it is pitch black. Everyone returns to their ship – they are not far away, after all.
The Boat`s Works
Wir nutzen das nächste Wetterfenster, um an die australische Ostküste überzusetzen und klarieren in Southport ein. Die Einklarierungsregeln in Australien sind berüchtigt. Wir haben aber Glück: die Beamten von Immigration und Customs sowie Biosecurity sind ausgesprochen freundlich und kompetent. Wir haben uns schweren Herzens entschieden hier in Australien unsere Reise zu beenden und MariaNoa zu verkaufen. Hierfür muss MariaNoa nach Australien importiert werden. Auf der Grundlage eines Wertgutachtens sind zunächst Steuern und Zoll zu entrichten. Dennoch ist der Einklarierungsprozess nach kurzer Zeit abgeschlossen.
We take advantage of the next weather window to cross over to the Australian east coast and clear customs in Southport. The clearance rules in Australia are notorious. But we are lucky: the immigration, customs, and biosecurity officials are extremely friendly and competent. With a heavy heart, we have decided to end our journey here in Australia and sell MariaNoa. To do this, MariaNoa must be imported into Australia. Based on a valuation report, taxes and customs duties must first be paid. Nevertheless, the clearance process is completed after a short time.
Für den Verkauf ist noch viel Arbeit zu erledigen. Uns wurde die Bootswerft „The Boats Works“ empfohlen. Sie liegt in Coomera, Gold Coast im Hinterland und ist nur über einen Flusslauf zu erreichen. Es ist ein riesiges hoch professionelles Gelände mit diversen Kränen, um Yachten von kleinen Monohulls bis hin zu Superyachten aus dem Wasser zu heben und Arbeiten jeglicher Art durchzuführen.
There is still a lot of work to be done for the sale. The boat yard “The Boats Works” was recommended to us. It is located in Coomera, Gold Coast in the hinterland and can only be reached via a river. It is a huge, highly professional site with various cranes to lift yachts from small monohulls to superyachts out of the water and carry out all kinds of work.
Das Kranen, Kärchern und Platzieren geht so rasend schnell, dass wir noch während des Einklarierens MariaNoa am Fenster vorbeischweben sehen. Wir erneuern das Antifouling, montieren den neu angelieferten Ropestripper, lassen die Hülle polieren und erledigen den Service beider Motoren. Wir bleiben eine Woche bevor wir Richtung Süden entlang der Ostküste aufbrechen.
The craning, pressure washing, and positioning are done so quickly that we can see MariaNoa floating past the window while we are still clearing customs. We renew the antifouling, install the newly delivered rope stripper, have the hull polished, and service both engines. We stay for a week before heading south along the east coast.
Darkwood - Bellinger River
Wir ankern vor der Marina von Coffs Harbour, später bekommen wir einen Liegeplatz. Wir lernen die unglaubliche Gastfreundschaft der Australier kennen. Saskia und Kyle von der SV FourtyTwo kennen wir nur sporadisch. Wir haben mit ihnen einen Sturm auf den Cook Islands abgewettert und sie in Vanuatu wiedergetroffen. Sie haben gesehen, dass wir in Coffs Harbour sind und bieten uns spontan an, ihr unweit in Darkwood am Bellinger River gelegenes Familiendomizil zu nutzen.
We anchor off the marina at Coffs Harbour, and later we get a berth. We experience the incredible hospitality of the Australians. We only know Saskia and Kyle from the SV FourtyTwo sporadically. We weathered a storm with them on the Cook Islands and met them again in Vanuatu. They saw that we were in Coffs Harbour and spontaneously offered us the use of their family home in Darkwood on the Bellinger River, not far away.
Wir mieten uns einen Pkw und fahren durch die bezaubernde Landschaft Flussaufwärts des Bellinger River Richtung Darkwood. Das Haus liegt unter Bäumen direkt am Fluss. Es ist kein anonymes Wochenendhaus sondern ist sehr persönlich eingerichtet. Die offenen fließenden Räume erinnern mich an die Architektur des amerikanischen Architekten Frank Lloyd Wright. Wir verbringen 2 Nächte, waschen uns im Fluss und machen eine kleine Wanderung.
We rent a car and drive through the enchanting landscape upstream of the Bellinger River towards Darkwood. The house is located under trees directly on the river. It is not an anonymous weekend house but is very personally furnished. The open, flowing rooms remind me of the architecture of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. We spend two nights there, wash ourselves in the river, and go on a short hike.
Bellingen - Bellinger River
Auf dem Rückweg machen wir halt in Bellingen und kehren in der örtlichen Konditorei ein. Bellingen ist eine Kleinstadt am Bellinger River in New South Wales und weist eine Vielzahl denkmalgeschützter Gebäude der späten Kolonialzeit auf. Die Bürgersteige des Waterfall Way verlaufen in historischen Arkaden. Detailgetreue Schilder zieren die Decken.
On the way back, we stop in Bellingen and visit the local bakery. Bellingen is a small town on the Bellinger River in New South Wales and has a number of listed buildings from the late colonial period. The sidewalks of Waterfall Way run through historic arcades. Detailed signs adorn the ceilings.
Das Bellinger Valley wurde im Laufe der 1850er Jahre schrittweise besiedelt, wurden die Polizeistation und das Gerichtsgebäude in Bellingen errichtet, und die städtischen Grundstücke vermessen und 1870 öffentlich im West Kempsey Court House verkauft.
The Bellinger Valley was gradually settled during the 1850s, the police station and courthouse were built in Bellingen, and the municipal properties were surveyed and sold publicly in 1870 at West Kempsey Court House.
Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts waren die Vorräte an Rotzeder im Bellinger Valley praktisch erschöpft. Die gerodeten Flächen wurden zu erstklassigem Ackerland gemacht und das Tal zu einem Milchwirtschaftszentrum. Die indigene Bevölkerung war durch Krankheiten dezimiert, und viele wurden getötet, als sie versuchten, die Zedernschießer und neuen Siedler von ihrem Land zu vertreiben. ‚Black Jimmy‘ soll das letzte Vollblutmitglied des Bellinger Volkes gewesen sein. Black Jimmy starb 1922 und ist auf dem Bellingen Friedhof beigesetzt. Die Nachkommen leben noch immer im Gebiet von Bellingen.
By the early 20th century, the red cedar supplies in Bellinger Valley were virtually exhausted. The cleared areas were turned into prime farmland and the valley became a dairy farming center. The indigenous population was decimated by disease, and many were killed while trying to drive the cedar cutters and new settlers off their land. ‘Black Jimmy’ is said to have been the last full-blood member of the Bellinger people. Black Jimmy died in 1922 and is buried in Bellingen Cemetery. His descendants still live in the Bellingen area.
Thunderstorm 50 kn storm
Es ist schwer ein Wetterfenster Richtung Süden zu finden. Ein schweres Gewitter löst das nächste ab, die Winde drehen von Nord nach Süd und wieder zurück.
It’s difficult to find a weather window heading south. One heavy thunderstorm follows another, and the winds shift from north to south and back again.
Auf unserem Weg von Coffs Harbour nach Port Macquaire erwischt es uns dann. Wir können dem riesigen Gewitter nicht mehr ausweichen. Stundenlang irren wir durch die Wolkengebilde, um den Blitzen aus dem Weg zu gehen. Nach unserem Blitzeinschlag in Guatemala liegen die Nerven blank. Vor und hinter den Squals dreht der Wind auf 40 – 50 kn. Genau wissen wir es nicht, da unser Windinstrument aussteigt und nur noch Unsinn anzeigt. Zusätzlich fängt es an zu gießen. Fix und fertig erreichen wir Port Macquaire, wo wir an einer Mooring zwischen unbewohnten und teilweise abgewrackten Booten festmachen – mitten in einem Friedhof alter Boote.
On our way from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie, we get caught in it. We can no longer avoid the huge storm. For hours, we wander through the clouds to get away from the lightning. After being struck by lightning in Guatemala, our nerves are on edge. In front of and behind the squalls, the wind picks up to 40–50 knots. We don’t know exactly, as our wind instrument has stopped working and is now only showing nonsense. On top of that, it starts to pour with rain. Exhausted, we reach Port Macquarie, where we moor between uninhabited and partially wrecked boats – in the middle of a graveyard of old boats.
Abends bietet sich ein bedrohliches Schauspiel am Himmel. Innerhalb eines Wolkengebildes schießen die Blitze stundenlang hin und her, ohne den Boden zu erreichen. Die statische Aufladung ist spürbar, die immensen Entladungen bleiben aber innerhalb der Wolke.
In the evening, there is a threatening spectacle in the sky. Within a cloud formation, lightning flashes back and forth for hours without reaching the ground. The static charge is noticeable, but the immense discharges remain within the cloud.
Port Macquaire - Coastal Walk Way
Wir wollen Koalabären sehen und fahren mit dem Bus zum Koalabären-Krankenhaus. Unglücklicherweise ist dieses wegen Renovierungsarbeiten geschlossen. Wir laufen zur Küste und treffen auf den Coastal Walk Way. Die Küste ist pittoresk. Wunderschöne Sandstrände mit einzelnen Felsenformationen und starker Brandung wechseln sich mit Bereichen aus Steilküste ab. Der Weg geht auf und ab und endet an einem Leuchtturm von 1879.
We want to see koalas and take the bus to the koala hospital. Unfortunately, it is closed for renovation work. We walk to the coast and come across the Coastal Walk Way. The coast is picturesque. Beautiful sandy beaches with isolated rock formations and strong surf alternate with areas of cliffs. The path goes up and down and ends at a lighthouse dating from 1879.
Nelson Bay – Port Stephens
Unser letzter Stop ist Nelson Bay, wo wir aber nur für eine Nacht bleiben und nach einem Tankstop nach Pittwater weitersegeln.
Our last stop is Nelson Bay, where we only stay for one night before continuing on to Pittwater after refueling.
Pittwater
Pittwater ist das Segelparadies von Sydney. Hier liegen tausende von Yachten. Wir haben den einzigen Liegeplatz im Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club für MariaNoa reservieren können. Aber davon berichten wir im nächsten Film.
Pittwater is Sydney’s sailing paradise. Thousands of yachts are moored here. We were able to reserve the only berth at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club for MariaNoa. But we’ll tell you more about that in the next film.
