Ambrym
Wir segeln in den Norden von Ambrym einer Insel zentral in Vanuatu. Das heißt: eigentlich motoren wir, denn der Wind ist stark und genau gegenan. MariaNoa tut sich schwer und taucht tief ein in die Wellen, um sich gleich wieder hoch aufzubäumen. Die Wellenlänge passt nicht zur Rumpflänge unseres Katamarans. Außerdem ist MariaNoa einfach zu schwer und durch Motoren, Batterien und Tanks achtern ungleich beladen. Neben uns fährt ein 57 Fuß langer Katamaran mit altem Riß und nimmt die Wellen wesentlich ruhiger. Um das Kapp im Norden pfeift der Wind. Kurz unter dem Kapp gehen wir vor Anker. Es ist wunderbar ruhig, kaum Wind, kein Schwell. Unglaublich!
We sail to the north of Ambrym of an island centrally in Vanuatu. That means: actually we motor, because the wind is strong and exactly against. MariaNoa is having a hard time and dives deep into the waves to build up again. The wavelength does not match the hull length of our catamaran. In addition, MariaNoa is simply too heavy and unevenly loaded by motors, batteries and tanks eighten. Next to us is a 57-foot-long catamaran with an old crack and takes the waves much quieter. Around the Kapp in the north, the wind whistles. Just below the cap, we anchor. It’s wonderfully quiet, hardly any wind, no threshold. Incredible!
Rom-Battine
Hier im Norden von Ambrym leben Stämme der Ureinwohner auch Rom-Battine oder Albinsine genannt. Sie leben in Dörfern wie vor hunderten wenn nicht tausenden von Jahren. Wir unternehmen eine Zeitreise wie bereits in unserem letzten YouTube-Film beschrieben. Sie leben in Häusern aus den Materialien der umgebenden Regenwälder und leben von den Früchten der wild wachsenden oder kultivierten Bäume und Pflanzen.
Here in the north of Ambrym, indigenous tribes also live to Rome-Battine or Albinsine. They live in villages like hundreds of years ago, if not thousands of years. We are going on a journey through time as already described in our last YouTube film. They live in houses made of the materials of the surrounding rainforests and live on the fruits of the wildly growing or cultivated trees and plants.
Die Einwohner pflegen ihre kulturellen Traditionen und gesellschaftlichen Strukturen. Den höchsten Status haben die so genannten Chiefs, die wiederum durch bis zu 13 Ebenen in der Anerkennung steigen. Um die Höhe der Position erkennbar zu machen, tragen sie die Hauer von erlegten Wildschweinen. Die Position eines Chiefs ist vererblich.
The inhabitants cultivate their cultural traditions and social structures. The highest status is the so-called chiefs, who in turn rise through up to 13 levels in recognition. In order to make the height of the position recognizable, they carry the slopes of killed wild boar. A chief’s position is hereditary.
Back to our roots
Wir treffen auf die Rom-Battine anlässlich des Festivals „Back to our roots“. Tanz ist eine wichtige Ausdrucksform. Wir erleben eindrucksvoll den Lebia Dance, Custom Dance, Pipilan, Pata oder Yeng Dance. Die Krönung der Tänze ist aber schon wegen der Masken und Kostüme der berühmte Rom-Dance.
We will meet the Rome Battine on the occasion of the “Back to our roots” festival. Dance is an important form of expression. We experience the Lebia Dance, Custom Dance, Pipilan, Pata or Yeng Dance impressively. The crowning of the dances is already the famous Rome dance because of the masks and costumes.
Rom Dance ist eine traditionelle Tanzform der indigenen Gemeinschaften auf der Insel Ambrym im Südpazifik. Er gehört zu den kulturellen Ausdrucksformen, die Rituale, Geschichte und Identität der Bewohner verbinden. Das Festival „Back to our roots“ fungiert als Plattform, um diese Tradition öffentlich zu präsentieren, zu bewahren und mit Besuchern zu teilen.
Rome Dance is a traditional dance form of indigenous communities on the island of Ambrym in the South Pacific. Der Tanz verwurzelt sich in-legenden, Alltags- und rituellen Kontexten der lokalen Bevölkerung. Er dient der Ahnenverehrung, dem Austausch von Botschaften innerhalb der Gemeinschaft und dem Stärken sozialer Bindungen. Die Bewegungen, Kostüme und Trommelrhythmen tragen symbolische Bedeutungen, z. B. zur Ehrung von Vorfahren, zur Geschichten-Erzählung über Herkunft oder zur Bitte um Schutz und Fruchtbarkeit.
Typischerweise inkludiert der Rom Dance eine choreografierte Sequenz von Bewegungen, begleitet von rhythmischen Klängen der pittoresken Schlitztrommeln.
The dance is rooted in legend, everyday and ritual contexts of the local population. It serves the worship of the ancestors, the exchange of messages within the community and the strength of social bonds. The movements, costumes and drum rhythms bear symbolic meanings, e.g. for honoring ancestors, for storytelling about origin or asking for protection and fertility.
Typically, the Rom Dance includes a choreographed sequence of movements, accompanied by rhythmic sounds of the picturesque slit drums.

Wie viele indigene Tanzformen stehen Rom Dance vor Herausforderungen wie Modernisierung, touristischer Kommerzialisierung und Erhalt von Sprache und Ritualen. Nachhaltige Festival-gestaltung betont die Zusammenarbeit mit Ältestenräten, klare kulturelle Rahmenbedingungen und faire Partizipation lokaler Künstlerinnen und Künstler.
Like many indigenous dance forms, Rom Dance face challenges such as modernization, tourist commercialization and the preservation of language and rituals. Sustainable festival design emphasizes the cooperation with councils of elders, clear cultural framework conditions and fair participation of local artists.
