460 nM from Port Denerau Fiji to Port Resolution Vanuatu
Wir reisen weiter Richtung Westen. Von Fidschi kommend ist Vanuatu unser nächster Stop. Eine ganze Flotille bricht nahezu zeitgleich nach dem Ausklarieren in Port Denerau auf, um Port Resolution im Süden Vanuatus oder die Hauptstadt Port Vila weiter nördlich zu erreichen. Das lang ersehnte Wetterfenster hat viele Yachten veranlasst, die Gelegenheit zu nutzen. Wir haben günstige Winde und mäßigen Wellengang. Mit der s.g. weißen Garderobe ist MariaNoa besonders langsam, nur bei weniger Wind können wir mit dem 85 m² Gennacker mit den anderen Yachten mithalten. Durch die große Anzahl gleichzeitig segelnder Schiffe, erkennen wir, dass eine Lagoon 40 auf engstem Raum maximalen Wohnkomfort bietet aber eben auch sehr langsam ist.
We travel further west. Coming from Fiji, Vanuatu is our next stop. An entire flotilla breaks up almost simultaneously after clearing out in Port Denerau to reach Port Resolution in the south of Vanuatu or the capital Port Vila further north. The long-awaited weather window has prompted many yachts to take the opportunity. We have favorable winds and moderate waves. With the so-called white wardrobe MariaNoa is particularly slow, only with less wind we can keep up with the 85 m2 Gennacker with the other yachts. Due to the large number of ships sailing at the same time, we recognize that a Lagoon 40 in the narrowest space offers maximum living comfort but is also very slow.
Nach 460 nM erreichen wir Port Resolution. Es ist bereits Nacht, als wir die Bucht auf der Insel Tanna erreichen. Die Bucht ist vollgestopft und wir gehen vorsichtig hinter der letzten Yacht vor Anker. Im Morgengrauen verlegen wir tief in die Bucht, vorbei an 17 anderen Yachten, die wir teilweise bereits kennen.

Clear in
In der Bucht Port Resolution werden wir von freundlichen Einheimischen begrüßt, die von ihrem schlechten Fischfang berichten. Der viele Regen macht es den Fischern schwer, die Fische auszumachen. Die Bucht ist von dichtem Regenwald umgeben. Man kann kaum erkennen, dass hier überhaupt Menschen leben. Dass dies ein Irrtum ist, sollen wir bald erkennen.
In the Bay of Port Resolution, we are greeted by friendly locals who report on their poor fishing. The rain makes it difficult for the fishermen to spot the fish. The bay is surrounded by dense rainforest. You can hardly see that people live here at all. That this is a mistake, we should soon realize.
Per Funk werden wir zum Einklarieren gerufen. Der Einklarierungsprozess findet unter einem Fahnengeschmückten Dach mit einem traumhaften Blick auf die Anchorage statt. Ich sage den Mitarbeitern von Customs, Immigration und Biosecurity, dass dies das schönste Büro ist, dass ich je gesehen habe. Sie sind bereits am Vortag aus Lenakel dem Hauptort der Insel Tanna angereist, um die vielen Yachten abzuarbeiten. Brigitta hat wie immer den Einklarierungsprozess online perfekt vorbereitet, sodass wir schon nach wenigen Minuten alle Unterlagen vollständig in Händen halten. Wir können mit Vanu, australischen oder amerikanischen Dollar bezahlen. Die Umrechnungskurse sind sehr phantasievoll. Die absolute Unversehrtheit der Banknoten ist da schon wichtiger, da die Banken Geldscheine mit den kleinsten Macken nicht akzeptieren.
We are called by radio to clear in. The clearing process takes place under a flag-decorated roof with a fantastic view of the Anchorage. I tell Customs, Immigration and Biosecurity employees that this is the most beautiful office I have ever seen. The day before, you arrived from Lenakel to the capital of the island of Tanna to work off the many yachts. As always, Brigitta has perfectly prepared the declaration process online, so that we have all the documents in our hands after just a few minutes. We can pay with Vanu, Australian or American dollars. The conversion rates are very imaginative. The absolute integrity of the banknotes is already more important, since the banks do not accept banknotes with the smallest quirks.
The Village
Der Inselstaat Vanuatu mit 350.000 Einwohnern hat umgeben von wohlhabenden Ländern wie Australien, Neuseeland und Neu Kaledonien ein relatives Bruttoinlandsprodukt, das nicht einmal 1/10 seiner Nachbarn beträgt. Unerwartet machen wir eine Zeitreise und tauchen in die dörflichen Strukturen ein, die außerhalb der Hauptstadt Port Vila das Leben der Bevölkerung prägen.
The island nation of Vanuatu, with a population of 350,000, has a relative gross domestic product surrounded by wealthy countries such as Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, which is not even 1/10 of its neighbours. Unexpectedly, we take a journey through time and immerse ourselves in the village structures that characterize the lives of the population outside the capital Port Vila.
Im Anschluss an das Clear In machen wir einen ersten Rundgang durch das nahegelegene Dorf. Um einen kreisrunden Anger sind die Häuser für 1.000 Einwohner angelegt. Eingebettet in eine üppige Natur finden wir in dem ausgesprochen gepflegten Dorf Häuser, die aus den Materialien der umgebenden Regenwälder errichtet sind. Die Gemeinschaft der Familien steht im Mittelpunkt des Lebens: Gemeinsam werden die natürlichen Ressourcen geteilt. Älteste und lokale Führungspersonen spielen eine wichtige Rolle, vermitteln Weisheit und koordinieren Gemeinschaftsprojekte. Auf dem Anger findet zwecks Streitschlichtung gerade eine hitzige Debatte um das Kava-trinken von Frauen statt.
After the Clear In we take a first tour of the nearby village. Around a circular Anger the houses are laid out for 1,000 inhabitants. Embedded in a lush nature, we find houses built from the materials of the surrounding rainforests in the decidedly well-kept village. The community of families is at the heart of life: together, natural resources are shared. Oldest and local leaders play an important role, imparting wisdom and coordinating community projects. On the Anger, a heated debate about the kava-drinking of women is taking place for the purpose of dispute resolution.
Dieser soziale Rahmen gibt Sicherheit, stärkt das Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl und schafft Raum für Rituale, Festlichkeiten und gegenseitige Unterstützung. Generell begegnen uns die Bewohner ausgesprochen freundlich und offen. Da sie englisch sprechen, ist jederzeit eine neugierige Kommunikation möglich. „Halo“ oder „Evoy“ öffnet die Herzen.
This social framework provides security, strengthens the sense of togetherness and creates space for rituals, festivities and mutual support. In general, we meet the residents very friendly and open. Since they speak English, curious communication is possible at any time. “Halo” or “Evoy” opens the hearts.
Roadtrip to Lenakel
Die Bewohner von Port Resolution sind geschäftstüchtig und bieten Fahrten zum Vulkan und zum Hauptort Lenakel an. Es regnet. Auf den holprigen Wegen werden wir auf der Ladefläche des Pick Up mächtig hin- und her geworfen. Plötzlich fahren wir aber auch auf von den Chinesen hergestellten Straßen, die sich die geführten Touren zum Vulcan Mount Yasir sichern wollen. Wir erreichen die Ash Planes eine mystische Landschaft aus Lavaasche. Der Vulcan selbst ist in dichte Wolken eingehüllt. Es regnet.
The residents of Port Resolution are business-minded and offer trips to the volcano and the main town of Lenakel. It’s raining. On the bumpy paths we are thrown back and forth mightily on the loading area of the pick up. Suddenly we also drive on the Chinese-made roads, which want to secure the guided tours to the Vulcan Mount Yasir. We reach the Ash Planes a mystical landscape of lava ash. The Vulcan itself is wrapped in dense clouds. It’s raining.
Lenakel liegt in Lee des Vulcans. Das Wetter wird deutlich besser. Am ATM in Lenakel können wir uns endlich mit Bargeld eindecken. Hauptattraktion ist aber der Markt. Die bunten Farben der Menschen konkurrieren mit den Farben von Obst und Gemüse. Ansonsten bietet Lenakel nichts von Interesse. In einem Restaurant verbringen wir die Zeit bis zum vereinbarten Treff, um die Rückfahrt anzutreten. Auch der Fahrer kommt früher und die abenteuerliche Rückfahrt kann beginnen.
Lenakel is in Lee des Vulcans. The weather is getting much better. At the ATM in Lenakel we can finally stock up on cash. The main attraction is the market. People’s colorful colors compete with the colors of fruits and vegetables. Otherwise, Lenakel offers nothing of interest. In a restaurant we spend the time until the agreed meeting to start the return trip. The driver also arrives earlier and the adventurous return journey can begin.
Auf den Ash Plains gießt es inzwischen noch mehr als am Morgen. So bestaunen wir einerseits die Mondlandschaft aus Lavaasche, anderseits bleibt uns ein Blick in den Krater verwehrt.
In the Ash Plains, meanwhile, it is pouring even more than in the morning. On the one hand, we marvel at the lunar landscape of lava ash, on the other hand, we are denied a view into the crater.
Port Resolution – Port Vila
Leider sind mal wieder viel Wind und noch mehr Wellen angesagt. Wir brechen spontan nach Port Vila auf. So schade, wir hätten gerne noch ein paar Tage gehabt, um die gastfreundlichen Menschen besser kennenzulernen aber auch noch eine Tour zum Vulkankrater zu unternehmen. Vielleicht kommen wir auf dem Weg nach Neukaledonien hier noch einmal vorbei.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of wind and even more waves. We spontaneously leave for Port Vila. It’s a shame, we would have liked to have had a few more days to get to know the hospitable people better but also to take a tour to the volcanic crater. Maybe we will come here again on the way to New Caledonia.
Port Vila
In Port Vila drängen sich ein Dutzend Yachten an den dicht gesetzten Mooring Bällen der World Yachting Marina. Die Mooringbojen machen einen soliden Eindruck. Baulärm von der kleinen vorgelagerten Iririki Island und das Rostabhämmern der Werften lassen uns wissen, dass wir hier in der Hauptstadt von Vanuatu sind. Vom Ufer schallt Autolärm und Sirenengeheul herüber.
In Port Vila, a dozen yachts crowd into the densely set Mooring Balls of the World Yachting Marina. The mooring buoys make a solid impression. Construction noise from the small offshore Iririki Island and the rust hammering of the shipyards let us know that we are here in the capital of Vanuatu. From the shore, car noise and siren howl echoes over.
Am Abend wird ein kostenloses Musikfestival veranstaltet. Mit Sonnenuntergang mehren sich die Zuschauer und lagern sich auf dem Rasen vor der Bühne. An einem der Verkaufsstände erstehen wir etwas Fingerfood. Bei den Mülltonnen wird den Einwohnern von Vanuatu Mülltrennung erklärt – wir in Europa kennen das ja seit vielen Jahren.
In the evening, a free music festival will be held. With sunset, the spectators multiply and store themselves on the lawn in front of the stage. At one of the stalls we buy some finger food. The waste bins are explained to the inhabitants of Vanuatu waste separation – we in Europe have known this for many years.
Mele Beach Club
Den Mele Beach Club erreichen wir mit einem Sammeltaxi, das wir einfach an der Straße anhalten. Sammeltaxis werden auch Bus genannt, denn echte Busse gibt es nicht in Vanuatu. Hier im Mali Beach Club gibt es Freitags eine Fackelshow und Sonntags – wie heute – eine Artistik- und Lasershow. Insbesondere die Kinder haben ihren Spaß, wenn es knallt und kracht und laute Musik erschallt. Vor Sonnenuntergang werden verschiedene Waffen wie Zwillen, Pfeil und Bogen sowie die Muskete thematisiert. Kannibalismus ist Teil der eigenen Geschichte. Ein Artist zeigt spektakuläre Figuren im Trapez.
We can reach the Mele Beach Club with a collective taxi, which we simply stop at the road. Collective taxis are also called bus, because there are no real buses in Vanuatu. Here at the Mali Beach Club there is a torchlight show on Fridays and – like today – an artistry and laser show. In particular, the children have their fun when it pops and crashes and sounds loud music. Before sunset, various weapons such as twine, arrow and bow as well as the musket are addressed. Cannibalism is part of one’s history. An artist shows spectacular figures in the trapeze.
Während einer Pause geht die Sonne unter und die Lasershow beginnt. Alles ist auf höchstem Niveau, sensibel inszeniert und dramaturgisch ausgesprochen professionell. Wir sind begeistert und fragen uns wie es zu dieser Professionalität kommen kann.
During a pause, the sun goes down and the laser show begins. Everything is at the highest level, sensitively staged and dramaturgically extremely professional. We are thrilled and wonder how this professionalism can happen.
Tanna Coffee
Wir machen gemeinsam mit einer befreundeten Yacht eine Inselrundfahrt. Erster Stop ist Tanna Coffee. Nur eine kurze Autofahrt von Port Vila entfernt liegt Tanna Coffee, welches weit mehr als nur ein Kaffeeproduzent auf der Insel Tanna ist. Die Wurzeln des Unternehmens liegen im Boden und im Alltag der Inselbewohner.
We take an island tour together with a friendly yacht. The first stop is Tanna Coffee. Just a short drive from Port Vila is Tanna Coffee, which is much more than just a coffee producer on the island of Tanna. The roots of the company lie in the soil and everyday life of the islanders.
Die Produkte zeichnen sich durch fruchtige, aromatische Noten aus und werden typischerweise in milder bis mittlerer Röstung präsentiert, wobei der genaue Geschmack je nach Ursprung der Bohnen variiert. Mele Cascades
Mele Cascades ist einer der beliebtesten Naturausflüge der Insel Efate. Der Weg dorthin führt durch dichte Tropenlandschaft, vorbei an exotischen Vögeln und dem Duft von feuchtem Grün. Der Weg zu den Kaskaden ist gut begehbar, die wasserüberspülten Felsen jedoch zum Teil gefährlich glatt. Am Ende finden wir ein Ensemble von Wasserfällen mit klaren Becken, die zum Baden einladen. An warmen Tagen ist das kühle Nass eine wunderbare Erfrischung, während die Umgebung mit üppiger Vegetation und dem Rauschen des Wassers beeindruckt.
Mele Cascades is one of the most popular nature excursions on the island of Efate. The way there leads through dense tropical landscape, past exotic birds and the scent of moist greenery. The way to the cascades is easy to walk, but the water-suffering rocks are sometimes dangerously smooth. At the end we find an ensemble of waterfalls with clear pools that invite you to swim. On warm days, the cool water is a wonderful refreshment, while the environment impresses with lush vegetation and the sound of the water.
Blue Lagoon
Der klare, türkisfarbene See „Blue Lagoon“ liegt in einer felsigen, grünen Umgebung und gilt als eines der bekanntesten Fotomotive der Insel Efate. Ein ruhiger, flacher Badesee mit feinem Sand am Ufer. Idealer Ort zum Schwimmen und Schnorcheln, der größte Spaß ist das Einschwingen an einem Seil. Bei zunehmender Leibesfülle aber abnehmender Muskelkraft muss ich erkennen, dass es lange her ist, dass dies bei mir sportlich ausgesehen hat.
The clear, turquoise lake “Blue Lagoon” is located in a rocky, green environment and is considered one of the most famous photo motifs of the island of Efate. A quiet, shallow bathing lake with fine sand on the shore. Ideal place for swimming and snorkeling, the greatest fun is the swinging on a rope. With increasing body fullness but decreasing muscle strength, I have to realize that it has been a long time since this has looked sporty in my company.
Maskelyne Islands
In kleinen Tagesetappen verholen wir nach „Maskelyne Islands“ einer kleinen Anchorage zwischen Riffen und einer kleinen Insel mit drei Dörfern. Wir sind 4 deutsche Yachten und werden von den Bewohnern herzlich aufgenommen.
In small stages of the day we move to “Maskelyne Islands” a small anchorage between reefs and a small island with three villages. We are 4 German yachts and are warmly welcomed by the residents.
Dugong
Das Boot, das uns zu den Dugongs abholt, ist gut gefüllt. An der ersten Stelle sind die Dugongs heute nicht anzutreffen, sodass wir weit hinausfahren müssen. Auch hier ist die Population nur klein. Dafür treffen wir auf eine bunte Korallenwelt mit noch bunteren Fischen.
The boat that picks us up to the Dugongs is well filled. At first place, the Dugongs are not to be found today, so we have to go far out. Again, the population is only small. For this we meet a colorful coral world with even more colorful fish.
Der Dugong wird bis zu vier, meist drei Meter lang und erreicht ein Gewicht von 230 bis 900, meist 400 Kilogramm, womit er kleiner als die beiden Manatiarten bleibt. Weibchen sind etwas größer. Die glatte, braune bis dunkelgraue Haut des Dugong weist in Abständen von zwei bis drei Zentimetern kurze Tasthaare auf. Die 35 bis 45 Zentimeter langen Vorderflossen werden von den Jungtieren zur Fortbewegung (Antrieb) genutzt, während adulte Tiere die sogenannten Flipper fast ausschließlich zum Lenken verwenden.
The dugong grows up to four, usually three meters long and reaches a weight of 230 to 900, usually 400 kilograms, which keeps it smaller than the two manati species. Females are a little bigger. The smooth, brown to dark grey skin of the dugong has short touch hairs at intervals of two to three centimeters. The 35 to 45 centimeter long front fins are used by the young for locomotion (drive), while adult animals use the so-called pinball machines almost exclusively for steering.
Während die Manatiarten gelegentlich das Süßwasser aufsuchen, hält sich der Dugong fast ausschließlich im Salzwasser auf. Sein heutiges Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst die Küsten des Indischen Ozeans und Teile des Westpazifiks. Die Bestände vor Australien haben bedeutenden Umfang – die übrigen sind sehr klein. In der Volksrepublik China gilt der Dugong als funktional ausgestorben.
While the manatic species occasionally visit the fresh water, the dugong is almost exclusively in the salt water. Its current distribution area includes the coasts of the Indian Ocean and parts of the Western Pacific. Stocks off Australia have a significant amount – the rest are very small. In the People’s Republic of China, the dugong is considered functionally extinct.
Three Villages Tour
Viele Dorfbewohner betreiben Landwirtschaft, Gartenbau, Fischerei oder Kleinhandel. Typische Grundnahrungsmittel sind Maniok, Yams, Süßkartoffeln, Kakao, Kokosnüsse und frischer Fisch. Überschüsse werden gehandelt oder verkauft und ermöglichen so kleine Einnahmen, die das Dorfleben ergänzen. Die Lebensweise bleibt damit eng mit dem Rhythmus der Natur verbunden.
Many villagers are farming, horticulture, fishing or retail trade. Typical staple foods are cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, cocoa, coconuts and fresh fish. Surpluses are traded or sold and thus allow small income that complement village life. The way of life remains closely connected with the rhythm of nature.
Baumaterialien sind naturnahe Materialien wie Holz und Palmfasern. Viele Häuser sind einfach gebaut, mit Strohdächern oder Blechdächern, angepasst an lokale Ressourcen und klimatische Bedingungen. Offene Räume, Veranden und Gemeinschaftsplätze fördern Gespräche, Spiel und Nachbarschaftshilfe. Die Dörfer sind ausgesprochen ordentlich und sauber. Müll, wie z.B. in den SanBlas Inseln, sieht man hier nicht.
Construction materials are natural materials such as wood and palm fibres. Many houses are simply built, with thatched roofs or tin roofs, adapted to local resources and climatic conditions. Open spaces, verandas and community grounds promote talks, games and neighbourhood assistance. The villages are very tidy and clean. Garbage, as in the SanBlas islands, is not seen here.
In einem der drei Dörfer ist ein junger Mann gestorben. Er war kaum 18 Jahre alt, als er nach 3 Tagen mit akuten Bauchschmerzen verstarb. Wahrscheinlich hatte er einfach nur einen Blinddarmdurchbruch. Dass die Gemeinschaft das Geld für einen Krankenhausaufenthalt jedoch nicht aufbringen konnte, war sein Todesurteil. 100 Tage lang haben die Männer sich nicht rasiert. Heute wird mit einem großen gemeinschaftlichen Essen und einem Rasierritual des jungen Mannes gedacht.
In one of the three villages a young man died. He was barely 18 years old when he died after 3 days of acute stomach pain. He probably just had an appendix breakthrough. The fact that the community could not raise the money for hospitalization, however, was his death sentence. For 100 days the men did not shave. Today, a large communal meal and a shaving ritual of the young man is intended.
Wenn ich früher in einem Naturkunde- oder Freilichtmuseum oder in architekturgeschichtlichen Vorträgen meines Studiums solche Haus- oder Dorfstrukturen gesehen habe, habe ich assoziiert, dass in dieser primitiven Architektur eben auch primitive Menschen gehaust haben. Was für ein Irrtum. Wir begegnen intelligenten, englischsprachigen Menschen mit Smartphone und Umgangsformen. Ein geringes Bruttosozialaufkommen heißt eben nicht, dass man den Anschluss an die Gegenwart verloren hat.
If I used to see such house or village structures in a natural history or open-air museum or in architectural lectures of my studies, I have associated that primitive people also lived in this primitive architecture. What a mistake. We encounter intelligent, English-speaking people with smartphones and manners. A small gross nationality does not mean that one has lost to join the present.
