Musket Cove
Musket Cove ist ein beliebtes Resort auf der Insel Malolo Lailai im Fiji-Archipel, Teil der Mamanuca-Inseln. Musket Cove liegt westlich von Fiji und ist in etwa 20 bis 30 Minuten mit dem Boot von Denarau und damit vom Internationalen Flughafen Nadi zu erreichen. Innerhalb der Gesamtanlage finden Gäste mehrere Unterkunftsmöglichkeiten, darunter das Musket Cove Yacht Club Resort, kombiniert mit Privatunterkünften und Villen.
Musket Cove is a popular resort on the island of Malolo Lailai in the Fiji archipelago, part of the Mamanuca Islands. Musket Cove is located west of Fiji and can be reached in about 20 to 30 minutes by boat from Denarau and thus from Nadi International Airport. Within the entire complex, guests will find several accommodation options, including the Musket Cove Yacht Club Resort, combined with private accommodation and villas.
Zu den Highlights zählen gepflegte Strände, ruhige Lagunen, Wassersport wie Schnorcheln, Tauchen, Kajakfahren sowie Segeln und Bootsausflüge; der Musket Cove Yacht Club ist ein historischer Treffpunkt für Segler. Lifetime Memberschip
Wir sind mit MariaNoa in nur 2 ½ Stunden von Vuda Marina hierher motort. Eigentlich wollen wir nur wenige Tage bleiben, bevor wir nach Vanuatu weitersegeln. Doch wie so oft machen uns Wind und Welle einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Musket Cove ist allerdings der ideale Ort, um das nächster Wetterfenster abzuwarten.
We are with MariaNoa in just 2 1⁄2 hours from Vuda Marina here. Actually, we only want to stay a few days before sailing on to Vanuatu. But as so often, wind and wave make us a dash through the bill. Musket Cove is the ideal place to wait for the next weather window.
Die mit Untiefen gespickte Bucht ist brechendvoll. Hier liegen viele Segler aus Neuseeland und Australien vor Anker. Segler gehören zum Gesamtkonzept von Musket Cove und sind willkommen. Als ersten Schritt fahren wir an das großzügige Dingy-Dock und gehen zum Marina Office um hier die berühmte „Lifetime Memberschip“ zu erwerben. 20 FJD für den Skipper und 50 FJD für jedes Crewmitglied.
The bay peppered with shallows is breaking. Many sailors from New Zealand and Australia are anchored here. Sailors are part of Musket Cove’s overall concept and are welcome. As a first step, we go to the generous dingy dock and go to the Marina Office to purchase the famous “Lifetime Memberschip” here. 20 FJD for the skipper and 50 FJD for each crew member.
Yacht Club Island Bar
Noch vor dem Marina Office kommen wir an der Yacht Club Bar auf einer separaten Insel vorbei. Hier treffen sich viele Segler, es gibt deutsches Weizenbier und neuseeländischen Rosewein … und eine sehr gesellige Atmosphäre. Tagsüber werden Kindergeburtstage gefeiert und abends gibt es Livemusik. Leider handelt es sich um Countrymusic und ist auf den Geschmack der Aussis und Kiwis abgestimmt. Uns wäre traditionelle Fiji-Music lieber.
Even before the Marina Office we pass the Yacht Club Bar on a separate island. Here many sailors meet, there is German wheat beer and New Zealand rose wine … and a very sociable atmosphere. During the day children’s birthdays are celebrated and in the evening there is live music. Unfortunately, it is country music and is tailored to the taste of the Aussis and Kiwis. We would prefer traditional fiji music.
Antifouling
Während wir in Deutschland waren, hat sich in der Marina am Unterwasserschiff von MariaNoa ein dichter Muschelbewuchs gebildet. Schnorchelnd und tauchend bin ich 2 Tage beschäftigt, diesen Bewuchs mit einem Spachtel zu bearbeiten – zunächst schnorchelnd von der Wasseroberfläche aus, später dann mit Pressluft bis zum Kiel.
While we were in Germany, a dense shell growth was formed in the marina on the underwater ship of MariaNoa. Snorkeling and diving, I am busy for 2 days to work this growth with a spatula – first snorkeling from the surface of the water, later with compressed air to the keel.
Glücklicherweise lässt sich der dichte Bewuchs auf dem Antifouling leicht abschieben. Auf Saildrive und Propeller haftet der Bewuchs dann um so heftiger. Ich spanne einige Mooringleinen unter dem Schiff kreuz und quer und halte mich an Ihnen fest. Mit 11 kg Softblei bin ich schwer genug, um mich austariert zu fühlen und nicht ständig gegen den Schiffsboden auftreiben zu müssen.
Fortunately, the dense growth on the antifouling can be easily pushed off. On Saildrive and Propeller, the growth then adheres all the more violently. I stretch some moor ring lines under the ship and hold on to you. With 11 kg soft lead, I’m heavy enough to feel balanced and not have to constantly find myself against the ship’s bottom.
Traders Cafe
Bei Traders Cafe legen die Hochgeschwindigkeitsfähren von und nach Port Denerau und damit zum Internationalen Flughafen Nadi an. Binnen 30 Minuten nach Verlassen des Flughafengebäudes kann der paradiesische Urlaub in einem der Musket Cove Resorts beginnen. Üblicherweise wohnt man auf Musket Cove in luxuriösen Einzelhäusern mit einer großen Veranda.
At Traders Cafe, the high-speed ferries dock to and from Port Denerau and thus to Nadi International Airport. Within 30 minutes of leaving the airport building, the paradise holiday can begin at one of the Musket Cove Resorts. Usually you live in Musket Cove in luxurious single houses with a large veranda.
Diese Häuser findet man direkt an lagunenartigen Wasserflächen, in Palmengärten oder sogar direkt am Strand. Hinter der niederländisch anmutenden Klappbrücke kann man seine Yacht in unmittelbarer Nähe seines Hauses festmachen.
These houses can be found directly on lagoon-like water surfaces, in palm gardens or even directly on the beach. Behind the Dutch-looking folding bridge you can moor your yacht in the immediate vicinity of your house.
Auf Musket Cove können Gäste in Raintree-Zimmern für bis zu 3 Personen oder in Garden Villas für bis zu 5 Personen untergebracht werden. Das Resort verfügt über eine Gesamtkapazität von 55 klimatisierte Unterkünfte und bietet somit Platz für ca. 220 Gäste.
Auf Musket Cove können Gäste in Raintree-Zimmern für bis zu 3 Personen oder in Garden Villas für bis zu 5 Personen untergebracht werden. Das Resort verfügt über eine Gesamtkapazität von 55 klimatisierte Unterkünfte und bietet somit Platz für ca. 220 Gäste.
Die ca. 175 Mitarbeiter wohnen auf der anderen Seite der Insel in ein- bzw. zweigeschossigen Häusern. Die Bautätigkeit hier zeigt, dass weitere Arbeitsplätze entstehen. Ein Mitarbeiter berichtet, dass entgegen anderen Resorts hier sowohl die Unterkünfte als auch Wasser und Strom kostenlos sind. Die Mitarbeiter arbeiten in verschiedenen Schichtmodellen. Während ihrer Arbeitstage wohnen sie auf der Insel, haben sie einen oder mehrere Tage frei, fahren sie mit der Hochgeschwindigkeitsfähre nach Port Denerau auf die Hauptinsel.
The ca. 175 employees live on the other side of the island in one- or two-storey houses. The construction activity here shows that more jobs are being created. One employee reports that, contrary to other resorts, both the accommodations and water and electricity are free of charge. Employees work in different shift models. During their working days, they live on the island, have one or more days off, take the high-speed ferry to Port Denerau on the main island.
Tidenhub
Der Tidenhub in Musket Cove beträgt 1,10 m, optisch sind es irgendwie noch mehr. Bei Ebbe steigt jedes Mal eine Sandbank aus dem Meer auf. Hier treffen sich viele Ausflugsboote und Dingys um im Umfeld der Sandbank zu schnorcheln. Durch die starke Strömung ist der Planktonanteil im Wasser hoch und die Fischpopulation vielfältig.
The tiden stroke in Musket Cove is 1.10 m, visually it is somehow even more. At low tide, a sandbar rises from the sea every time. Many excursion boats and dingies meet here to snorkel around the sandbank. Due to the strong current, the plankton content in the water is high and the fish population is diverse.
Brodies Rock
Der False Pass zwischen der Malolo Insel und der Lailai Insel fällt jedes Mal bei Ebbe trocken, wird aber bei Flut deutlich überflutet. Es ist Flut und wir fahren mit dem Dingy zwischen den Inseln hindurch zum Brodies Rock. Wir legen unser Dingy vor Anker und schnorcheln im Uhrzeigersinn um den markanten Felsen. Ich sehe einen White Tip Shark und eine Schildkröte. Das Umfeld um den Brodies Rock ist aber eher karg.
The False Pass between the Malolo Island and the Lailai Island falls dry every time at low tide, but is significantly flooded at high tide. It’s flood and we’re taking the dingy between the islands to Brodies Rock. We anchor our dingy and snorkel clockwise around the distinctive rock. I see a White Tip Shark and a turtle. The environment around the Brodies Rock is rather barren.
False Pass
Nur wenige Stunden später fällt bei Ebbe der Pass zwischen Malolo und Lailai nahezu trocken. Wir waten durch das knöcheltiefe Wasser und finden sogar ganz trocken gefallene Sandbänke. Für einen erneuten Ausflug zum Brodies Rock wüssten wir jetzt wo die Passage am tiefsten und frei von Felsen ist.
Just a few hours later, the pass between Malolo and Lailai falls almost dry at low tide. We wade through the ankle-deep water and even find very dry fallen sandbanks. For another trip to Brodies Rock, we would now know where the passage is deepest and free of rocks.
Malolo Lailai Airstrip
Musket Cove hat eine erstaunliche Infrastruktur. Auf dem Malolo Lailai Airstrip mit Feuerwehr, Tankstelle und Abfertigungsgebäude landen in den Tagen, die wir hier vor Anker liegen nur eine Hand voll Hubschrauber und eine Cessna. Bei der guten Fähranbindung ist eine Fluganbindung allerdings auch wenig sinnvoll.
Musket Cove has amazing infrastructure. On the Malolo Lailai Airstrip with fire department, gas station and check-in building land in the days that we anchor here only a handful of helicopters and a Cessna. With the good ferry connection, however, a flight connection is also of little use.
Plantation Golf Course
Gleich neben dem Airstrip liegt der 9-Loch Plantation Golf Course. Freunde von uns haben hier gespielt und positiv berichtet. Wir selbst können jedoch keine intensive Nutzung durch die Gäste feststellen. Wie bei vielen Golfplätzen weltweit steht der Pflegeaufwand in keinem Verhältnis zur Frequentierung.
The 9-hole Plantation Golf Course is right next to the airstrip. Friends of ours played here and reported positively. However, we ourselves cannot determine intensive use by the guests. As with many golf courses worldwide, the maintenance effort is out of proportion to the frequency.
Lomani Lookout
Auf unserem Inselrundgang kommen wir am Lomani Lookout vorbei. Wir erklimmen die kleine Anhöhe und erhalten einen wunderschönen Rundumblick, insbesondere auf die Anchorage mit MariaNoa.
On our island tour we pass the Lomani Lookout. We climb the small hill and get a beautiful panoramic view, especially on the Anchorage with MariaNoa.
Lomani Island Resort
Das Lomani Island Resort liegt an der Westspitze von Musket Cove und stellt wohl unter dem Motto „adults only“ das exklusivste Angebot dar. Nach einem Capuccino und einem Tee ziehen wir uns in eine Sitzmuschel am Strand zurück um Aufnahmen für den YouTube Film „Kosten auf Langfahrt 2024“ zu machen. Man erkennt auch von außen, dass die am Strand stehenden, klimatisierten Häuser jeweils mit einem openair-Badezimmer ausgestattet sind.
The Lomani Island Resort is located on the western tip of Musket Cove and is probably the most exclusive offer under the motto “adults only”. After a capuccino and a tea, we retreat to a seat shell on the beach to make footage for the YouTube movie “Costs on long-distance 2024”. It can also be seen from the outside that the air-conditioned houses on the beach are each equipped with an open-air bathroom.

Das Plantation Island Resort nebenan bietet verschiedene Unterkunftsmöglichkeiten für die meisten Budgets und bietet ein hervorragendes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis für Familien, Studenten und lebenslustige Paare. Die meisten Aktivitäten sind kostenlos, darunter auch der „Coconut Kids Club“.
The Plantation Island Resort next door offers various accommodation options for most budgets and offers excellent value for money for families, students and fun-loving couples. Most of the activities are free, including the Coconut Kids Club.
Anchorage
Die Anchorage zeigt sich je nach Windstärke und -richtung von seiner romantischen oder seiner sportlichen Seite. Bei starkem Wind packen viele Segler ihre Surf-, Wing- bzw. Foilbretter aus und heizen zwischen den ankernden Booten hin und her. Wer stürzt steigt wieder aufs Brett und setzt die wilde Fahrt fort.
The anchorage shows itself from its romantic or sporty side, depending on the wind and direction. In strong winds, many sailors pack their surf, wing or Foil boards and heat back and forth between the anchoring boats. Who falls climbs back on the board and continues the wild ride.
Balmar
Auch hier in Musket Cove ereilt mich ein technisches Problem auf MariaNoa. Starte ich die Zündung der Backbordmaschine, startet die Zündung der Steuerbordmaschine gleich mit. Die Balmar Lichtmaschinenregler aber auch die Ventilatoren im Maschinenraum steuerbord starten. In die andere Richtung ist das Phänomen nicht zu beobachten. 2 ½ Tage sortiere und beschrifte ich Kabel in beiden Maschinenräumen aber eine Lösung ist nicht zu erkennen.
Here in Musket Cove, too, I have a technical problem with MariaNoa. If I start the ignition of the port machine, the ignition of the starboard machine starts immediately. The Balmar alternator controllers but also the fans in the machine room start control board. The phenomenon cannot be observed in the other direction. 2 1⁄2 days I sort and label cables in both machine rooms but a solution is not visible.
